The Correlation Between the Students’ Learning Interest and Students’ Reading Achievement
By: Dariyanto

ABSTRACT

Interest is something crucial and indispensable for the students because the success of their study depends on the level of their interest to learn. If they have a high level of interest in learning, they will generally have a better chance to succeed in their study and their achievement will be higher than low ones.

There is a positive correlation between the students’ learning interest and students’ reading achievement; if the students’ learning interest is high, their achievement will be high. So, the students’ learning interest statistically correlated with the students’ reading achievement.

Key Words: Correlation, Learning Interest, Reading Achievement

INTRODUCTION
There are four basic skills of language in learning English namely: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. As one of the four basic skills, reading plays an important role in enhancing students’ English ability. More importantly reading functions as a tool to accessing information to the worldwide web. Reading is not only important to those who are studying in school or college, even for people who are not studying there anymore, because much information or literature is still written in English. It requires the comprehension of what is written in the text as a process to gain information.
The goal of reading at school is to give the students’ ability to read the material in English with comprehension, ease, and enjoyment. So, it hoped that the students will success in their study. They can achieve the goal of learning, and their achievement will be high, especially in reading.
However it seems that the learning process in some schools have not achieved those goals. There are many reasons that cause this condition. One of the reasons may lay on the affective elements, such as attitude, motivation, interest etc.
Syah (2007:136) states that someone who has an interest and intensive attention to subject matter will reach an optimal achievement.
From the description above, it can be seen that interest is one of internal factor that influence learning achievement. Interest is also something crucial and indispensable for the students because the success of their study depends on the greater part of their interest to learn. If their interest is poor they are very likely to fail in their study or at least they will have difficulty in making progress. On the other hand, if they have a high of interest in learning English, they will have a better chance to succeed in their study.

DISCUSSION

Syah (2007:136) states that someone who has an interest and intensive attention to subject matter will reach an optimal achievement. From statement above, it can be said that interest has influence in a subject area and students’ achievement. Interest has correlation through learning process and students’ achievement.
Based on the result of data analysis of the students’ learning interest and students’ reading achievement, there is a correlation between the students’ learning interest and students’ reading. It’s clear that students’ interest in learning English is one of supporting students’ reading achievement.
The result of data analysis confirmed that there is any significant correlation between the students’ learning interest and students’ reading achievement.
Based on the result of research, the writer would like to indicate that the students have to have higher level of interest in learning English. If the students have low level of interest in learning English, their reading achievement is low. But, if the students have high level of interest in learning English, their reading achievement will be high.

CONCLUSIONS
Based on the objective and the data, the writer takes several conclusions as follows:
1. There is a correlation. So, it can be said that the students’ learning interest has correlation towards students’ reading achievement.
2. There is a positive and significant correlation between the students’ learning interest and students’ reading. If the students have high level of interest, their reading achievement will be high. So, the students’ learning interest statistically correlated with their reading achievement.
